Finnair to Lay Off Pilots and Cut Long-Haul Routes Amid Ongoing Strikes

Finnair will temporarily lay off 36 pilots who operate its long-haul flights, starting at the end of September, with the furloughs expected to continue through at least May 2026. The decision follows months of disruption linked to industrial action by the Finnair Pilots’ Union, which began in December 2023. As a result, the airline is scaling down its wet lease operations for a partner carrier, maintaining service on only one route instead of two. Change negotiations were conducted earlier this year in line with Finnish labor law.

With fewer pilots available, Finnair will have a reduced number of reserve crews for long-haul operations, making replacements harder in cases of illness or technical problems. The furloughs are expected to raise the risk of flight delays and cancellations, particularly on long-haul routes that depend heavily on backup crews. Although the furloughs are tied mainly to the ending of one wet lease route, travelers could see changes to Finnair's own flight schedule, including a potential reduction in the frequency of services.

Passengers should also be aware of the ongoing labor instability at Finnair. The continuing strikes by pilots have created an unstable environment, making additional disruptions to flight operations increasingly likely. It is recommended that travelers regularly check their flight details before departure. Finnair’s decision to reduce its involvement in wet lease operations might make it harder for the airline to adjust its crews and aircraft during busy travel periods, potentially causing a more tight schedule.

The pilots' industrial action has impacted our wet lease operations, leading to changes in collaboration and the need to furlough pilots. The situation is unfortunate for all parties.
Jaakko Schildt, Finnair's Chief Operating Officer

Long-term effects may include adjustments to Finnair’s long-haul service availability. Since pilot furloughs will continue until 2026, the airline might reconsider its intercontinental routes to make the most of the available resources. While Finnair continues to focus on its core direct routes, the overall range of flight options could become more limited, encouraging passengers to plan trips well in advance and remain flexible in case of sudden changes.
