The picturesque town of Marazion, Cornwall, is set to host the exciting two-day Cornish Seaweed Festival on the 11th and 12th of May. This unique event promises an educational and fun-filled weekend exploring the vital role of seaweed in marine ecosystems.

The festival, organized by Natural England in collaboration with the Cornwall Wildlife Trust, the Mounts Bay Marine Group, and the Linnean Society of London, offers a plethora of free activities. Attendees can participate in snorkeling, rock-pooling, and seaweed-foraging along the diverse Cornish coastline. Moreover, the event features seaweed art, craft workshops, and cooking demonstrations, providing a hands-on experience for all ages.

A highlight of the festival is the showcase of the "Nereis Britannica", a rare illustrated seaweed volume by Cornish botanist John Stackhouse, dating back to the early 1800s. After a recent restoration funded by Natural England, this significant work will temporarily leave its home at the Linnean Society in London to be displayed in Cornwall, adding a historical touch to the festivities.

Muriel Plaster from Natural England, emphasizes the ecological importance of seaweed, stating, "Seaweed is often overlooked, but here off the coast of Cornwall, we have plenty of it. It’s fascinating, often beautiful, and plays a crucial role in our ecosystem." The festival aims to spread this message and increase appreciation for this often-undervalued marine resource.

Whether you're a local or a visitor, this festival offers a unique opportunity to explore the underwater wonders of Cornwall, making it a must-visit event this spring. Admission is free, although some workshops require pre-booking.
