Christmas and New Year train travel disrupted across Wales and the Borders

Rail travellers planning Christmas and New Year journeys across Wales and the Borders are facing a festive period shaped by restricted rail access and essential infrastructure upgrades. From 24 to 31 December, continuous engineering work near Cardiff Central will limit how trains move through one of the region’s most important hubs. Combined with a reduced holiday timetable, including no services on 25 and 26 December, the changes significantly affect how and when people can travel.

Rail routes travellers should watch closely

The disruption is centred on a number of locations where rail access will be reduced or operate differently during the works. These areas form key parts of many holiday routes, meaning even indirect journeys may be affected:

  • Routes west of Cardiff Central, where track closures will be in place
  • Services passing through Cardiff Central, with some platforms unavailable
  • Sections of west Wales later in the holiday period due to further engineering
  • The Aberdare line into January, which will be closed for extended maintenance

The practical impact is a rail network that functions differently from normal at a time when many people rely on it most. Journeys that usually pass smoothly through Cardiff Central may involve diversions, revised stopping patterns, or replacement buses. Travellers heading to family visits, accommodation stays, or onward transport connections may find trips take longer or require additional changes along the way.

Preparing for these conditions means approaching festive travel with flexibility. Travellers may need to allow extra time, avoid tightly timed connections, and be ready for last minute platform or timetable adjustments. Those returning after New Year should also factor in that disruption does not end immediately, as engineering work continues into early January on selected routes.

This is more than a routine rail update. The changes influence when journeys are possible, which destinations remain easy to reach, and how comfortable festive travel may be. For people planning festive trips, having a clear picture of the disruption makes it easier to plan realistically and choose travel times and routes with fewer surprises.
