In 2025 Chemnitz in the federal state of Saxony together with 38 neighbouring municipalities received the title of European Capital of Culture. The city is taking part in a large-scale programme called "C the Unseen" which includes cultural events in urban districts and rural areas. Organisers aim to draw attention to places that rarely appear on tourist itineraries and to present the region through contemporary art and the work of local communities.

Chemnitz is accessible by train from several major cities using Deutsche Bahn connections, with international tickets available through the Rail Europe system. Travellers can plan journeys that include the city as part of:

  • Intercity routes within Germany
  • Cross-border trips linking Germany with Central Europe
  • Itineraries combining Chemnitz with other destinations in Saxony and nearby regions

Arriving in Chemnitz by train, travellers can begin their exploration at the monumental bust of Karl Marx located close to the station. From there the route may lead to the Red Tower, a medieval defensive structure from the 13th century that has survived to this day. On the Town Hall Square stand two city hall buildings, old and new, which stand side by side and display different architectural eras, creating a distinctive contrast in the urban landscape.

Continuing the route, it is worth visiting the Kassberg district, known for its timber-framed and modernist houses from the early 20th century that give the streets a unique character. Along the banks of the River Pleiße are open-air sculpture compositions that form part of the city’s public art development programme. These locations are easy to combine into a single walking route starting from the central station and can be extended using public transport for more distant sites.

For those setting out on a trip, Chemnitz 2025 offers the chance to weave cultural events into a day spent wandering its streets, discovering its open spaces and taking in the mix of buildings that shape the city’s character. The well-developed rail network makes it easy to integrate Chemnitz into a journey through Germany or Central Europe, and the variety of local locations makes the trip both rich in experiences and meaningful.
