Starting from Saturday, 1 June, Network Rail will commence essential repairs on the Blackheath tunnel, causing a suspension of train services between Blackheath and Charlton for 10 weeks. The 175-year-old tunnel, integral to Southeastern's routes, will undergo significant maintenance, with services expected to resume on Monday, 12 August.

During this period, Southeastern trains will be rerouted to minimize disruption. The repairs involve cleaning the tunnel's soot with an industrial vacuum and replacing bricks damaged by freeze-thaw cycles. Additionally, a new concrete lining will be installed to prevent water leakage.

The continuous 10-week closure is necessary due to the complexity of working in confined tunnel spaces. Network Rail will optimize this period by conducting both daytime and some nighttime work to expedite the repairs. This approach aims to reduce the long-term disruption for passengers, as an alternative would have been intermittent weekend closures over a year.

David Davidson, Network Rail’s Kent route director, emphasized the benefits of this intense repair schedule, highlighting the quicker realization of reliability improvements for passengers. He assured minimal noise and vibration impact on nearby residents due to the tunnel’s depth and expressed gratitude for the patience of passengers and neighbors.

To mitigate the impact on travel, Southeastern has arranged for trains from Dartford to Cannon Street via Charlton and Lewisham to run through Greenwich, with additional stops at Westcombe Park, Maze Hill, Greenwich, and Deptford. Passengers can utilize the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) from Greenwich to Lewisham, adding approximately seven minutes to their journey. The Greenwich Line will have increased train frequency to accommodate the diverted services.

No rail replacement bus service will be provided, but ticket acceptance on several local bus routes has been arranged to ensure passenger convenience. These buses will add around 15 minutes to travel times. For those with accessibility needs, Southeastern will offer taxi services between Blackheath and Charlton at their expense.

This comprehensive repair initiative aims to ensure the long-term reliability and safety of the Blackheath tunnel, significantly benefiting Southeastern passengers and contributing to the overall improvement of the railway network.
