Australians are gearing up for one of the busiest travel periods of the year, with April presenting a rare alignment of holidays. The combination of school holidays, Easter weekend, and ANZAC Day enables travellers to enjoy a 10-day vacation using only three days of annual leave. This strategic window has led to a sharp increase in travel plans, with 38% of Australians expected to go on holiday during the month, according to Expedia and Wotif’s April Travel Outlook.

This extended break is motivating both local and international travel, with Queensland destinations such as the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast topping domestic searches. On the international front, cities like Queenstown, Osaka and Da Nang are catching fire owing to their great exchange rates and compelling last minute offers. Australians are expressing a clear preference for places that combine being affordable with memorable experiences, as the economy drives more fiscally responsible travel habits.

For those planning a getaway, timing remains crucial. Data indicates that flying or checking in on Sunday for any activity avoids crowds and prices tend to be lower in general. Internationally, Sunday is 24% less busy than Saturday, while domestically, it's 352% quieter than Friday. Flexible scheduling and mid-week travel can give travellers access to better availability and smoother experiences at airports and hotels.

As well as timing, bundling bookings on platforms such as Expedia and Wotif could save you up to $395. Taking a 4 star hotel instead of a 5 star property, or going the mile for a loyalty program benefits lets you discover more value with no loss of comfort. Travelers who want to get more out of their travel experiences but not spend as much are starting to have the navigational tools for smarter travel during peak times.

This unique alignment of public holidays transforms April into a valuable travel window. For Australians, it’s not just about getting away—it’s about making the most of time and money. By planning strategically and booking wisely, travellers can enjoy longer breaks with minimal annual leave, unlocking more possibilities for adventure and relaxation.
