From 22:30 on Wednesday 13 August until 06:00 on Friday 15 August, rail journeys in Friuli Venezia Giulia will be affected by planned infrastructure works at Bivio d’Aurisina station. Rete Ferroviaria Italiana will carry out the replacement of several track switches, essential for guiding train movements through the junction. Because of the station’s important location on the network, services on major routes such as Trieste–Udine, Trieste–Venice and Trieste–Villa Opicina will face temporary adjustments and possible suspensions.

These changes will affect a variety of travellers and routes, and understanding who will be most impacted can help in preparing for the journey. The following travellers are the ones most likely to feel the impact and should prepare in advance:

  • Visitors heading to tourist destinations within Friuli Venezia Giulia, who may find their usual train routes altered
  • Passengers travelling to Venice, Udine, Slovenia or Austria, where connections could be disrupted
  • Journeys requiring connections that may be altered or delayed, potentially extending overall travel time
  • Itineraries that could involve longer travel times and require more detailed connection planning than normal

To avoid unexpected issues, travellers are encouraged to check updated train schedules well in advance of departure and factor in additional time for connections. Choosing to leave a bit earlier or later than planned can make it easier to stick to your travel plans. If your journey is packed with connections or runs on a tight clock, be prepared for sudden changes to the timetable and keep your plans loose enough to adapt.

The timing of the works, coinciding with the peak summer holiday season, could make disruptions more noticeable. During the busiest times, trains could be full, and travellers might need to wait longer than usual before boarding. People travelling to Trieste’s beaches, historic spots, or continuing on to nearby countries should plan with these disruptions in mind, making sure their train tickets and accommodation check-ins allow extra time for possible delays.

Once complete, the upgrades are intended to boost reliability and cut the risk of future technical disruptions. Although these two days may present challenges, the improvements should lead to a smoother and more punctual rail service. For visitors to Friuli Venezia Giulia and those using it as a gateway to other regions, the long-term outcome promises a more dependable travel experience for both domestic exploration and international journeys.
