Travellers heading to the North Cotswolds in August should prepare for service changes, as a section of the railway between Moreton-in-Marsh and Worcester Shrub Hill will be closed for planned maintenance. From 18 to 24 August, all trains along this route will be suspended, with replacement buses in operation. The closure takes place during peak summer travel, impacting access to rural communities, hiking trails, and countryside points of interest throughout the area.

The scheduled works, announced by Network Rail, include:

  • Replacement of worn track near Honeybourne station
  • Drainage upgrades in the Evesham area
  • Maintenance within the historic Chipping Campden tunnel, dating back to 1853
  • Installation of a new walkway to improve safety for railway staff

These important tasks are part of a broader infrastructure upgrade plan designed to guarantee reliable service over the long term. The maintenance is required but will temporarily slow passenger movement along this key travel corridor.

Our work will ensure the continued safe and reliable running of trains through the Cotswolds. We’re sorry to temporarily close the railway but it will benefit passengers long into the future.
Network Rail programme manager Jason Pankhurst

The disruption is likely to be felt most by leisure travellers relying on the North Cotswolds line to reach popular destinations during the summer break. With train services halted, travellers could face extended travel times and more complicated routes. Visitors aiming for destinations like Broadway Tower’s hilltop views, the nature trails on Bredon Hill, or the large lavender farms near Evesham should prepare for potential travel difficulties.

Travellers planning to visit Pershore Abbey Park, which features historic surroundings and spacious green areas, the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust nature reserves known for their rich variety of habitats, or the walking paths at Croome Park, a vast estate with extensive grounds, may face increased difficulties reaching these locations during the closure. Limited bus services and longer transfer times will require travellers to adjust plans carefully to avoid disruptions during the closure period.

Passengers should note that the news highlights the importance of checking transport updates when planning regional trips. Although access to some well-known destinations may be limited during the closure week, careful planning and adaptability can reduce travel disruptions. The temporary interruption reflects ongoing upkeep required to maintain safe and dependable service on a key rural railway.
