In an inspiring collaboration, Alaska Airlines and the Portland Trail Blazers have embarked on a mission to blend their passion for sports with a commitment to education, specifically targeting opportunities for BIPOC youth. This initiative was highlighted during the annual "HBCU to the Pros" game on February 25, an event that not only celebrated the rich culture and history of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) but also underscored the importance of educational equity.

The partnership, which leverages Alaska Airlines' role as the official airline of the Trail Blazers, saw a weekend filled with activities aimed at empowering the youth. A notable pre-game event was Junction Ave, a gathering that showcased Black businesses and was hosted by Self Enhancement, Inc. (SEI). Here, young individuals had the chance to meet with Alaska Airlines' pilots and recruiters, engaging in discussions about aviation careers and even experiencing flight simulators.

The highlight of the weekend was the electrifying performance by the Prairie View A&M Marching Storm Band during halftime. The 40-member band was flown in from Texas aboard Alaska's "Our Commitment Plane," a special aircraft symbolizing the airline's dedication to promoting education and equity, especially among Black youth in the Pacific Northwest.

James Thomas, Alaska Airlines’ Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, emphasized the airline's longstanding commitment to connecting Black youth with educational opportunities at HBCUs and beyond. The initiative is part of a broader effort to inspire local youth by exposing them to the unique culture of HBCUs and the potential for future educational paths.

Alaska Airlines has a rich history of supporting educational journeys for students, demonstrated by its "Our Commitment" aircraft, launched nearly three years ago in partnership with UNCF. This initiative has facilitated numerous trips for students to visit colleges and engage in educational activities. The airline's recent announcement of increased daily departures from Portland International Airport (PDX) and the introduction of a new flight between Portland and Atlanta further exemplifies its commitment to connecting communities and fostering opportunities for education and growth.
