Passenger detained for opening the airplane's emergency exit, but passengers called it "rescue"

An Aeromexico passenger "rescued" fellow travelers by opening the plane's emergency exit during a 4-hour delay. He was detained by the police, but at least 77 travelers expressed their support for the man in writing.

According to the Associated Press, the incident occurred at Mexico City International Airport. The flight to Guatemala was scheduled to depart at 8:45 am but was delayed due to a technical malfunction.

Passengers complained about the excessive heat inside the aircraft. They stated that they were locked in without water or ventilation.

When conditions became unbearable, one of the passengers opened the emergency exit and stepped out onto the wing to let in fresh air. According to the airport, he did not damage the plane or disturb anyone, but the wing needed replacement as per regulations.

Following the incident, the man surrendered to security, although passengers convinced him that he had acted appropriately.

"The delay and lack of air created conditions that jeopardized the passengers' health. He saved our lives," the statement read.

At least 77 passengers on board signed a statement in defense of the detainee. In total, the flight experienced a delay of 4 hours and 56 minutes, finally taking off at 14:18.
