Air New Zealand marks a significant milestone today as it celebrates 20 years of direct flights between Auckland and San Francisco. The service, which began on June 30, 2004, has provided New Zealanders with a seamless link to the iconic American city.

Since the inaugural flight, Air New Zealand has transported over three million passengers on 11,800 flights between the two cities. Due to the route's popularity, the airline doubled its services to six return flights per week by 2005.

Air New Zealand’s General Manager International, Jeremy O'Brien, highlights San Francisco’s enduring appeal to both Kiwi travelers and American visitors to New Zealand. He notes that the city is a favorite destination, not only for its famous landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island but also for its strategic role as a stopover.

The Auckland-San Francisco route has also been vital for cargo operations, with 3,500 tonnes of goods, including premium New Zealand lamb and seafood, transported annually. This trade supports important economic ties between New Zealand and the United States.

Originally launched with a Boeing 747-400 featuring a Lord of the Rings livery, the route now operates with a Boeing 777-300ER. The 747 served this route until its final commercial flight on September 12, 2014, marking the end of an era for the aircraft in Air New Zealand’s fleet.

Beyond San Francisco, Air New Zealand offers flights to several other US destinations, including Honolulu, Los Angeles, Houston, and New York, with onward connections to over 100 domestic locations through its alliance with United Airlines.

As Air New Zealand celebrates this 20-year journey, it continues to strengthen the bonds between Auckland and San Francisco, fostering both tourism and trade for the future.
