Travellers in Italy this April should brace for multiple transport strikes set to affect mobility across the country. On Tuesday, 9 April, a four-hour national walkout by airport personnel is scheduled from 12:00 to 16:00. Organised by the CUB Trasporti union, the action could lead to delays in check-in services, baggage handling and other key airport operations, potentially impacting both domestic and international flight schedules.

A broader transport disruption is expected later in the month when railway workers across Trenitalia, Italo, Trenord and Trenitalia Tper launch a 23-hour strike from 03:00 on Friday, 11 April until 02:00 on Saturday, 12 April. The USB Lavoro Privato union is leading the protest, which will likely affect both long-distance and regional trains. While minimum services are mandated by law, exact schedules are still pending confirmation from rail operators.

These coordinated strikes could pose significant challenges for tourists visiting Italy during the spring holiday period. Disruptions in air and rail networks may cause missed connections, forced overnight stays, or even the cancellation of carefully planned itineraries. The strikes coincide with rising tourist volumes, as travellers flock to Italy for warmer weather, cultural events, and the Easter aftermath, increasing the likelihood of congestion and service bottlenecks.

To mitigate disruptions, travellers should check official transport updates regularly and plan flexible itineraries. Booking refundable tickets, avoiding tight schedules between connecting services, and considering alternative transport modes such as car hire or coach travel can reduce stress. Local public transport services in cities may also be affected by a separate strike on 26 April, so urban movement should be planned accordingly.

These pre-arranged strikes are timely reminders that traveling in a country with a live labour movement calls for travelers to be well-informed and flexible. For those heading to Italy in April, understanding the dates and scope of disruption in advance will help minimize inconvenience and preserve the quality of the travel experience.
