Venice introduces a tourist tax: how much and who will have to pay
The Venice authorities continue to grapple with the crowds of tourists flooding the ancient city, which is considered one of the most popular destinations among tourists.
Excessive tourism has already damaged the ecological system of Venice. To regulate the flow of tourists in Venice, a tourist tax will be introduced, as reported by euronews.com.
It is planned that tourists will pay €5 per day. This way, the authorities aim to reduce the influx of foreign visitors, encourage them to stay longer, and ultimately improve the lives of residents.
Who will pay the tourist tax in Venice:
The tax is especially applicable to tourists who visit during the high season, which spans from April to mid-July (April 25-30, May 1-5, and the following weekends until July 14, except for June 1-2). There are 29 such days a year.
Guests will have to pay for visiting Venice during peak hours from 8:30 to 16:00.
However, the following will not pay the tourist tax: city residents, natives of Venice, students and workers, as well as tourists who have booked a hotel or other accommodation. After paying 5 euros, tourists will receive a QR code, which will then be checked at checkpoints in seven locations in the city, including the main railway station.
The tax will be paid on the portal. It is noted that violators face a fine of €50 to €300.
At the same time, travelers will not have to pay the tax when booking a hotel room, as it is already included in the room rate.
