For most users, the process will be automatic, but some passengers will need to undergo manual verification by uploading their documents and taking a selfie to confirm their identity.
This new system was introduced in response to a series of incidents involving assaults on Uber drivers. For instance, in August this year, a woman in New York used pepper spray on a driver and was later charged with assault. Uber believes this measure will provide more peace of mind for both drivers and passengers, particularly during late-night rides.
