People traveling in the North East of England are being warned of service disruptions over the weekends of 13-14 and 20-21 September due to essential work by Network Rail. Parts of the Newcastle to Edinburgh line will be closed while engineers carry out improvements to tracks, drainage systems, switches, crossings, and overhead line equipment. These projects are intended to strengthen the reliability of both passenger and freight journeys and help prevent delays over the long term.

A series of key infrastructure works have been planned across several locations to address long-standing maintenance needs and improve overall travel safety. The engineering projects scheduled for the North East include:

  • Replacement of nearly one kilometre of drainage piping at Killingworth to reduce flooding delays
  • Track improvements at Belford and Stannington
  • Upgrades to switches and crossings at Belford and Berwick
  • Renewal of ballast at Newham level crossing
  • Enhancements to overhead line equipment between Pegswood and Widdrington
“We appreciate that this work will mean a couple of weekends of where some journeys will take longer than usual, and we’d like to thank passengers for their patience while we carry out these improvements."
Sam MacDougall, Network Rail operations director

Travelers planning trips to locations such as Holy Island of Lindisfarne, Bamburgh Castle, and St Abb’s Head Nature Reserve will face delays due to bus replacements and diverted routes. CrossCountry and TransPennine Express will operate replacement bus services between Newcastle and Edinburgh, while LNER trains will run hourly via Carlisle. Replacement coaches will link Morpeth, Alnmouth, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Reston, and Dunbar with major stations, causing longer journey times for travelers heading to these coastal and more remote locations.

Other destinations likely to be affected include Dunstanburgh Castle, Kielder Water and Forest Park, and Bass Rock, which rely on train access for easier travel. LNER northbound services will have altered stopping patterns affecting Peterborough, Doncaster, and Durham. Lumo trains will run only between London King’s Cross and Newcastle, and the 20.56 Edinburgh to Newcastle service will not operate on Saturdays. Northern trains between Carlisle, Hexham, and Morpeth, Chathill will terminate or start at Newcastle, with bus replacements available, while the Northumberland Line operates normally.

Travelers should be prepared for short-term interruptions, but the planned upgrades are expected to improve rail services over the long term. These works are intended to manage flooding, strengthen the track infrastructure, and modernize the overhead electrical systems. Passengers are advised to review real-time travel updates, plan alternative routes if needed, and allow extra time for their trips. The upgrades reflect the need for ongoing rail improvements, supporting dependable travel while temporarily restricting access to notable natural and historic locations.
