Rail travellers heading from London to the South West of England this August should be aware of upcoming timetable changes on the London Waterloo to Exeter St Davids line. Beginning Monday 11 August, South Western Railway will halve its service frequency on this route, operating just one train every two hours. Trains will operate at much slower speeds, resulting in journeys that can take up to an hour longer because of weather-related damage to the tracks.

This operational adjustment is the result of extended dry weather that has weakened the clay soil supporting railway embankments, particularly in the area between Gillingham and Axminster. Consequently, several safety precautions and service disruptions have been put in place:

  • Ground movement has caused the tracks to become misaligned
  • Speed limits have been enforced to lower derailment risks
  • Trains must not exceed 40 miles per hour in the affected zones
  • Services running between London Waterloo and Yeovil Junction face delays of up to 25 minutes
  • The revised timetable will remain until soil moisture improves and the situation stabilises
We are very sorry for the disruption that customers will experience due to this change, as we know just how important the West of England line is to the communities it serves.
Stuart Meek, South Western Railway’s Chief Operating Officer

Tourists planning to explore the southwest countryside may find it more difficult to get to spots such as Lyme Regis Fossil Beach, famous for its dramatic cliffs and ancient fossils along the Jurassic Coast. Travelling to the scenic Forde Abbey Gardens near Chard could also become less convenient as travel times and train availability shrink. Similarly, walks along the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty may now require additional planning due to longer journey durations and fewer train options to nearby stations.

In addition, other attractions such as the tranquil Beer Quarry Caves, the historic gardens at Hestercombe near Taunton, and the River Axe Canoe Trail are also expected to see fewer visitors arriving by train. With limited train connections, these areas favored by eco-tourists and day visitors might be more challenging to visit on brief stays. Planning short visits by train to these areas may become more complicated as the current conditions continue to affect services.

While the disruption may cause frustration for travellers, the changes are intended to prevent further delays and ensure safety on the line. Significantly, this update returns normal train operations to Crewkerne station after a period of reliance on replacement buses. Conditions could lead to more restrictions in the near future, so travellers are advised to stay informed and prepare accordingly.
