Tourists warned against drinking Kopi Luwak coffee in Bali
In Bali, tourists were urged not to drink the popular coffee made from civet excrement or kopi luwak. The animals are reportedly kept in wire cages and fed rotten berries.
The mistreatment of animals was reported by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) in a video investigation posted on YouTube on March 5. This was reported by the South China Morning Post.
According to Jason Baker, PETA's senior vice president, the video was filmed at a farm in Katur, which is located in a small town 48 km north of Ubud. Baker claims that locals are misleading tourists as mass production of kopi luwak is impossible without enslaving animals. Baker also emphasises that the organization found that the civets were covered in feces, had open wounds, and were fed rotten coffee berries.
It is noted that a boycott of such coffee production with animal enslavement already took place in 2022. Then, during the collection of feces, it was found that the civets were stressed.
