Three Weekends of Rail Disruption Hit Newcastle–Scotland Trains
Rail journeys between Newcastle and Scotland will face major disruption over three weekends as Network Rail carries out a £7.1 million upgrade programme on the East Coast Main Line. Direct services will be reduced or replaced on sections north of Newcastle, with some trains diverted away from the usual coastal route. Travellers using intermediate stations should expect longer journeys and bus transfers while the work is under way.
What Changes on Each Weekend
- Affected weekends: 19–20 September, 26–27 September and 3–4 October.
- LNER: Hourly Newcastle–Edinburgh services divert via Carlisle.
- Lumo: Trains run only between London King’s Cross and Newcastle.
- CrossCountry/TPE: Trains are replaced by buses on affected sections between Newcastle and Edinburgh.
- Northern: Buses replace Newcastle–Morpeth/Chathill trains on all three weekends.
- ScotRail: Edinburgh–Dunbar trains do not run on 19 and 26 September; buses connect Drem and Dunbar.

LNER passengers can still travel directly between Newcastle and Edinburgh, but the hourly service will take the longer route via Carlisle instead of Berwick-upon-Tweed. Morpeth, Alnmouth, Berwick, Reston and Dunbar will rely on replacement transport for affected journeys. CrossCountry and TransPennine Express passengers will also need buses on parts of the route, while Lumo services will terminate at Newcastle rather than continue into Scotland.
Northern passengers face additional changes around Northumberland. Buses replace trains between Newcastle and Morpeth or Chathill on all three weekends, with Northumberland Park–Ashington services also replaced on the first two. Tyne & Wear Metro accepts Northern tickets between Newcastle and Northumberland Park at no extra cost on those dates. ScotRail’s Edinburgh–North Berwick trains continue normally, while Dunbar services change on the affected Saturdays.
The work includes more than 3.2km of new track, eight sets of points, 1.5km of overhead line equipment and drainage upgrades intended to reduce future failures and flooding. The biggest issue for passengers will be longer connections. Replacement buses may be busy, so anyone changing in Newcastle or Edinburgh should allow extra time and bring only luggage they can comfortably move between train and coach.
