Birmingham–Manchester Airport Trains Return After Decades
Birmingham travellers will get a direct rail link to Manchester Airport next year when London Northwestern Railway extends its network north of Crewe. The new service will remove the current need to change trains at Crewe, Wilmslow or in Manchester city centre, restoring a one-seat airport journey from the West Midlands for the first time in decades. The route will be introduced in two stages.
How the New Airport Link Will Work
- Route: Birmingham New Street–Manchester Airport.
- Operator: London Northwestern Railway.
- First phase: Birmingham–Crewe from 13 December 2026.
- Airport extension: May 2027.
- Frequency: Hourly.
- Evening services: Last trains on the Crewe–Manchester Airport section are planned at around 22:00 instead of 20:00.
- Sundays: Hourly service planned instead of every two hours.
- Timetable: December timings expected in journey planners in late September; May 2027 timings expected in February.
- Tickets: Normally released around 12 weeks before travel.
- Who benefits: Passengers from Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Stafford and Stoke-on-Trent heading to Manchester Airport without changing trains.
The biggest change is the removal of a connection for passengers travelling to Manchester Airport from Birmingham and the wider West Midlands. At present, Birmingham journeys usually require a change at Crewe or Manchester Piccadilly. The direct service will make the airport easier to reach with luggage by removing a rail connection, while later evening trains on the airport section will give passengers more flexibility after late arrivals.
Manchester Airport serves more than 200 destinations with over 50 airlines, including long-haul routes that are not available from every regional UK airport. A direct train gives passengers in Birmingham, the Black Country and Staffordshire another airport option without driving or changing trains. That gives passengers more choice when comparing long-haul fares or deciding whether Manchester is worth using instead of an airport closer to home.
The December phase is useful for regional journeys, but it will not yet create a direct Birmingham–Manchester Airport train. That arrives in May 2027, when the same service continues beyond Crewe to the airport. Anyone planning a flight around the new connection should wait for the final timetable before fixing a tight rail-to-air transfer, especially as exact end-to-end timings have not yet been published.
