Anyone planning days out in England has until 20 September to use Heritage Open Days, which is offering more than 6,200 free events nationwide. The useful part is not the headline number but the access: some normally paid or rarely opened places can be visited without an admission fee. However, free entry does not always cover parking, the full property or extra activities, so each listing needs checking.

The programme still includes options that can be used later this week. Tyntesfield near Bristol is offering free entry every day through 20 September without advance booking, while historic bus tours in Manchester run again on 19 and 20 September with no reservation required. Bletchley Park also has a free family activity on 19 September, although timed tickets must be booked in advance and availability should be checked before travelling.

What to Check Before You Go

  • Dates: 11–20 September 2026.
  • Entry: listed Heritage Open Days events are free.
  • Booking: some require advance reservations; others accept walk-ins.
  • Extras: parking, food and access to the wider property may still cost extra.
  • Availability: popular tours can fill up.
  • Tyntesfield: free entry until 20 September, no advance booking required.
  • Killerton: Columbjohn Chapel is free from 1pm to 3pm until 20 September; normal admission applies to the wider estate and parking costs extra.
  • Check: use the official Heritage Open Days event directory.

Because conditions vary by venue, the official directory is more useful than treating the festival as one blanket free-entry offer. Search by location and date, then check the individual listing before travelling. Pay particular attention to booking requirements, parking charges, accessibility and opening times. Some events cover an entire property, while others only provide free access to one tour, room or activity.

With only a few days left, the strongest options are places where the free access replaces a normal admission charge or opens areas visitors would not usually see. That makes the event useful for a low-cost day trip, but only if the conditions match the plan. Checking the exact date, booking requirement, parking fee and what the free ticket actually covers can save both money and a wasted journey.
