The holiday is approaching: 20 places Britons dream of visiting at Christmas
Some people prefer to stay at home for the holidays, while others see it as another great opportunity to travel. Whether you choose a ski resort or a sunny exotic island depends on your preferences. The main thing is to fully enjoy the holiday atmosphere.
Meeting Santa in Lapland, shopping in New York, and watching the northern lights in Iceland topped the list of the top 20 places to visit for Christmas. More than 2,000 respondents participated in the survey. The Scottish Sun reports which destinations they chose and where they want to go.
Results of the survey
Despite Christmas being a winter holiday, and the tendency to choose mountainous ski resorts, winter sunny destinations are not losing popularity either: Barbados, Florida, and Sydney are among the top ten.
Many would rather not leave the UK and instead admire the light trail at Edinburgh Royal Botanic Gardens, while others want to visit the Alps for skiing.
One-third want to travel on Christmas Day to immerse themselves in the festive atmosphere, while 27% want to enjoy a holiday with lots of snow.
Matt Richardson of John Lewis Travel Money, who commissioned the research, said:
"As our world becomes more interconnected, more travelers are choosing to celebrate the holidays abroad. This trend is about more than just chasing snow - it's about finding traditions, unique holidays, and the joy of being with friends and family."
It was also found that 26% want to go sailing at this time of year to chase the winter sun, as most of them are tired of the cold weather.
Almost one in three (32%) have traveled abroad for Christmas before, with 63% of them saying it was one of those holidays forever etched in their memory.
The research, conducted through OnePoll.com, found that 44% plan to visit a Christmas market this year in the UK or abroad. Respondents also note that fairs are a must-have attribute of the holiday, where you need to have cash in the local currency.
