Transport for Wales has announced a ten-day summer promotion giving passengers the opportunity to travel for only £1 per single journey when using the Pay As You Go (PAYG) system. Running from 19 to 28 August 2025, the discount covers 95 stations across South East Wales. This includes services to Abergavenny, Chepstow, Bridgend, Maesteg and the Vale of Glamorgan, as well as the Valleys lines. The initiative is exclusive to PAYG users and highlights the company’s commitment to expanding digital ticketing.

This promotion offers a much lower price than the usual fares, since trips like Abergavenny to Cardiff often reach about £4.20 under normal conditions. In other words, passengers can cut their travel costs by up to £3.20 on each trip. Importantly, the £1 fare applies throughout the promotional period, including weekends and the August Bank Holiday. Even when engineering works lead to train services being replaced by buses, passengers can still benefit from the offer, as long as they tap in and out properly or receive help from station staff.

For both tourists and local residents, this offer opens the door to exploring South East Wales at a far more affordable price than usual. This allows more people to enjoy affordable day trips to cultural landmarks, coastal towns, and picturesque valleys that are often overlooked due to the high cost of regular travel. With PAYG, passengers no longer need to worry about paper tickets or advance bookings, which makes the whole journey feel simpler, quicker, and far more convenient. This flexibility is especially beneficial for travelers who enjoy unplanned adventures and do not want to be restricted by strict timetables.

This scheme also gives passengers the chance to experience the everyday benefits of PAYG technology, showing how it can make routine journeys easier and more efficient. The system works by having passengers tap their card at the beginning of the journey and once more at the end, after which the reduced fare is automatically calculated and taken from their balance. During this special offer, passengers pay no more than £1 per trip, turning rail travel into one of the most budget-friendly and convenient options for getting around. This strategy demonstrates that combining simple payment options with substantial savings can motivate a wider audience to choose public transport more frequently.

Beyond simple cost savings, the offer reflects a broader shift in how rail travel is viewed in Wales. By lowering fares, Transport for Wales is motivating newcomers to try the service while also encouraging regular riders to travel more often and discover new destinations across the region. With the upcoming introduction of PAYG in North Wales, the £1 offer represents more than a temporary discount, it signals a long-term goal of building a rail network that is easier to use, technologically modern, and more welcoming for all passengers.
