Ryanair has unveiled its largest ever summer schedule for Calabria, outlining plans for 42 routes in 2026, including five new services from Lamezia Terme. The expansion follows the abolition of the municipal surcharge by regional president Roberto Occhiuto, a move the airline says has encouraged further investment and year-round growth in the region.

For summer 2026, Ryanair will base four aircraft in Calabria, two in Lamezia Terme and two in Reggio Calabria, representing a total investment of $400 million. The airline expects to carry 3.2 million passengers annually across Lamezia, Reggio and Crotone, a 14% increase on previous figures.

“As Europe’s and Italy’s number one airline, Ryanair is pleased to announce a record summer schedule in Calabria, with 4 based aircraft ($400 million investment), 42 routes including 5 new services from Lamezia, and increased frequencies on domestic connections from Reggio and Crotone."
Fabrizio Francioni, Head of Communications Italy at Ryanair

Key points of the summer 2026 programme

  • 42 routes in total, including new links to Bratislava, Budapest, Saarbrücken, Sofia and Warsaw from Lamezia
  • Increased frequencies on domestic services such as Reggio–Milan Malpensa, Turin and Venice
  • Higher frequencies from Crotone to Milan Bergamo and Bologna
  • Support for more than 2,500 local jobs, including 120 aviation roles

Calabria now has more direct links with several European capitals, and extra domestic flights make reaching northern Italian cities simpler. The new services from Lamezia add more choice for weekend trips and business journeys. With more seats available, the region may also see visitors spread more evenly across the season rather than concentrating only on the height of summer.

Ryanair says scrapping the municipal surcharge removed a cost that had held back expansion. The airline is calling on the Italian government to extend the same approach across the country, arguing that lower charges could support additional aircraft, routes and employment. Current figures in Calabria indicate continued growth and a larger role for its airports within Italy and the wider European market.
