Rail passengers traveling between Gloucester and Chepstow this May will experience temporary service changes due to essential maintenance work planned by Network Rail. From 12 to 16 May, the railway line connecting the two towns will be temporarily shut down for important infrastructure improvements. During this period, trains will not run directly, and replacement buses will operate to maintain access across the route.

The maintenance program includes a range of infrastructure improvements at key locations. Near Lydney, around 700 yards of deteriorating track will be replaced to ensure continued rail safety. At Newnham-on-Severn, the work will focus on repairing tunnel drainage and cleaning the stone. Additionally, preparations for future signaling upgrades will be made at the Broken Cross level crossing near Westbury-on-Severn.

These changes could inconvenience travelers, including both commuters and tourists, who rely on this section of the line. CrossCountry trains will terminate at Gloucester, and Transport for Wales services will stop at Chepstow. Passengers traveling through this section will need to transfer to replacement buses, which may lead to longer travel times and adjusted connections.

In the long term, these improvements are expected to result in smoother, more reliable journeys. The replacement track and improved drainage system aim to lower the chances of delays due to flooding or general wear and tear. Once the work is completed, the line will be better equipped to handle the daily traffic and seasonal demand, particularly for travelers heading to rural and coastal areas in southwest England and southeast Wales.

We're sorry for the disruption, but this work is essential for maintaining the railway and ensuring smoother journeys in the future. Please check your journey with your train operator or National Rail Enquiries before traveling.
Network Rail project manager Tom Hounslow

This disruption highlights the need for travelers to plan ahead, particularly during seasonal engineering work in the UK. Although the closure will only last five days, it is part of broader efforts to modernize the national transport infrastructure. Travelers should check schedules in advance and allow extra time for potential changes during the affected week.
