Temporary Rail Changes May Affect North Wales Coastal Travel

Travelers planning trips along the North Wales coast between Rhyl and Llandudno Junction should prepare for temporary service disruptions over three weekends at the end of September and beginning of October. Replacement bus services will operate during this period, and journey times may be longer than usual. Visitors heading to coastal areas, scenic walks, and outdoor activity spots should allow for temporary changes to their schedules.

The scheduled maintenance will take place over three weekends, with most work occurring overnight to limit daytime disruption. Passengers should note the following:

  • Dates of work: 27-29 September, 4-6 October, 11-13 October
  • Operating hours: From early Saturday morning until Monday pre-dawn
  • Travel advice: Check updated timetables, plan early departures, and use replacement bus services where necessary
“The upcoming engineering works are a key part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining a safe and dependable railway. These improvements are essential to ensuring the network remains resilient and continues to meet the needs of passengers and communities well into the future."

The work includes stabilizing Penmaenrhos Tunnel and conducting bridge inspections and maintenance at Pensarn Bridge over Abergele station. These activities will temporarily affect access to popular local sites, such as the Colwyn Bay seaside promenade, the Victorian pier at Rhyl, and the cliff-top walking trails near Penmaenrhos. Those looking to enjoy outdoor sights or coastal trails are advised to plan for detours or additional travel time during the weekend works.

Additional points of interest likely to experience limited access include the sandy beaches at Pensarn, the Abergele golf course, and the coastal cycling paths linking Abergele and Colwyn Bay. Although replacement buses keep the route open, reaching these sites directly could take longer and be less convenient. Passengers should plan their trips in advance and allow additional time to reduce potential delays.

Although temporary disruptions are expected, the maintenance represents an investment in a safer and more reliable railway network. Passengers can anticipate smoother journeys and fewer unexpected delays once work is completed. Travelers can plan their journeys and visit outdoor sites along the North Wales coast with more certainty, as the railway remains a reliable link through the area.
