Summer Train Closures in Northern Italy to Disrupt Access to Regional Destinations

Travellers heading through northern Italy this summer should prepare for planned disruptions along the Verona to Venice rail corridor. Train services will be suspended between Verona Porta Vescovo and Grisignano di Zocco on two weekends, June 14 to 15 and June 28 to 29, 2025, as part of infrastructure work conducted by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana. These interventions are connected to the expansion of the high-speed Verona to Vicenza railway line currently under construction.
In addition to the weekend closures, the following temporary station closures will take place:
- Montebello station from June 24 to September 7, 2025
- Lonigo station from June 24 to August 24, 2025
The station works include raising platform levels and rebuilding underpasses to meet modern rail standards. These extended suspensions will impact both regional mobility and access to nearby towns during the summer holiday season.
The closure of Montebello station may complicate visits to several local destinations. Travellers heading to the Colli Berici hills for outdoor activities like hiking and cycling will need to find alternative routes. The Parco Comunale di Montebello, a public park popular with locals and visitors, will also become less accessible. In addition, the historic Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista, located near Montebello Vicentino, may require additional planning to reach without direct train connections.
Passengers planning to travel to or from Lonigo will face similar issues. The famous Villa Pisani Bonetti, an early work by Andrea Palladio, will be harder to reach for architecture enthusiasts. Those attending summer fairs or exhibitions at the Fiera di Lonigo may experience delays due to changes in public transport availability. Access to the Santuario della Madonna dei Miracoli, a pilgrimage destination outside the town, will also be affected by the station closure.
Although these disruptions may pose difficulties for summer travel, they are part of a broader effort to modernize Italy’s rail network. Improved platforms, safer infrastructure, and updated systems are expected to enhance the overall passenger experience. Travelers should keep an eye on official updates, review any changes to train times ahead of their trip, and stay flexible with their plans to avoid unexpected problems during this period.
