An orange weather alert for severe thunderstorms is now in effect across Thessalia, Greece, including the regions of Magnisia and the Sporades islands. The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS) reports that severe storms with hail, lightning, and strong winds are expected through the evening. Many tourists visiting the region’s coastal towns and islands have been advised to stay indoors as travel plans, including ferry services and local tours, may be temporarily disrupted.

The alert comes at a time when Thessalia is welcoming autumn visitors exploring Pelion’s mountain trails and the beaches of Skiathos. Heavy rainfall and powerful gusts could trigger localized flooding or obstruct roads, especially in mountainous areas frequented by hikers. Travelers should follow the instructions provided by their hotels or tour operators and check for updates on transportation before continuing their journey.

People remaining in the area are advised to stay vigilant and follow essential safety measures. Tourists should close balconies, unplug electrical appliances that could be damaged, and stay away from the sea and large trees during a storm. Keeping essentials like water, flashlights, and charged devices close is recommended, as rural regions might face short-term power outages.

Motorists should exercise extra caution on mountain roads, which may turn slick or flood easily during heavy rainfall. Ferry and bus schedules can change unexpectedly, and domestic flights might face brief delays caused by unfavorable weather conditions. Travelers should allow extra time for transfers, monitor traffic and airport updates carefully, or postpone long-distance trips until weather conditions improve and travel becomes safer.

This storm warning is a reminder to travelers that flexibility is part of responsible tourism. The weather in Greece can change quickly, especially on the coast and in the mountains. Travelers can still enjoy the charm of Thessaly when the skies clear by adjusting their plans, putting safety first, and keeping an eye on official updates. This way, their journey will remain enjoyable and remembered for the best reasons.
