A 22-year-old passenger died after suffering a medical emergency on a Southwest Airlines flight between Dallas and Los Angeles. Rain McMillan Walmsey became unresponsive while Flight 958 was in the air on 7 August. CPR was carried out before the aircraft reached Los Angeles International Airport, where emergency teams were waiting. Despite further attempts to revive him after landing, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Southwest Flight 958: Key Details

  • Route: Dallas Love Field–Los Angeles
  • Flight: Southwest 958
  • Date: 7 August 2026
  • Passenger: Rain McMillan Walmsey, 22
  • In the air: Walmsey became unresponsive; CPR was given onboard
  • At LAX: Paramedics were waiting for the flight
  • Outcome: Walmsey died despite attempts to revive him
  • Cause: Not yet known

It is still unclear what happened to Walmsey before he lost consciousness. Someone onboard performed CPR while the flight continued towards Los Angeles, and paramedics took over after the plane landed. He could not be revived. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has not yet established a cause of death, while Southwest has confirmed only that a customer suffered a medical incident on Flight 958.

A serious medical episode on board can develop quickly, so anyone who feels unwell should tell cabin crew as soon as possible rather than waiting for symptoms to worsen. Other passengers should keep aisles clear and follow crew instructions while assistance is provided. If medical professionals are requested over the cabin announcement, qualified passengers may also be asked to help until the aircraft lands.

The cause of Walmsey’s death remains unknown, so there is no basis for linking it to a specific illness or condition. The incident shows how much an in-flight response can depend on immediate CPR and coordination with emergency teams on the ground. Southwest has confirmed the medical incident, while the medical examiner’s investigation will determine what caused the 22-year-old passenger’s death.
