Rail and bus passengers across Wales and the Borders are facing continued disruption as Yellow weather warnings for snow and ice remain in place into Tuesday. Scattered sleet and snow showers, combined with icy patches, are affecting travel conditions on Monday and overnight into Tuesday morning. Transport operators say services are running, but conditions on parts of the network may change quickly as temperatures stay low.

Transport for Wales and Network Rail confirmed they are closely monitoring the situation across the rail network. Passengers are being urged to check services before leaving home and to allow extra time when travelling. Slippery platforms, station access routes and car parks are adding to the challenges, particularly during early morning and late evening journeys when ice is more likely to form.

A yellow weather warning for snow and ice is in place across Wales. Journeys may be disrupted so please check our Live Map and All Updates page for the latest travel information.

Services affected by winter conditions

Poor weather has also affected replacement transport and some long-distance bus routes. Operators report that road conditions are limiting access in certain areas, leading to knock-on effects across different modes of travel.

  • Rail services may face short-notice delays or alterations
  • Rail replacement buses could be subject to changes or cancellations
  • TrawsCymru routes are impacted by icy and untreated roads

Transport authorities say updates will be shared through live service maps and online channels as conditions develop.

Even with the disruption, trains are still running to many parts of Wales and the Borders, covering both city centres and more remote areas. Trips to historic towns, coastal communities and national parks are continuing where services remain in place, although journeys may be slower than normal. Cold weather can also mean fewer visitors, giving those heading to museums, cultural venues and local sights a quieter window to explore.

Snow and ice are once again disrupting transport, showing how quickly services can be affected in winter. Track teams remain on duty throughout the day and night, dealing with faults as they appear, but safety continues to guide decisions. Passengers are being advised to check the latest service information before travelling, dress for cold conditions and plan for slower journeys, as roads, rail lines and stations remain affected in early January.
