Skyhub PAD Reopens Key Connection from Paderborn
Following Lufthansa's decision to end its Paderborn–Munich flights in 2025, a group of local entrepreneurs founded Skyhub PAD GmbH & Co. KG to restore the route. Starting September 1, 2025, the airline offers up to three daily flights between Paderborn/Lippstadt and Munich. These flights are operated by Danish Air Transport (DAT) using ATR72-600 turboprop aircraft, which are designed for short regional routes. Restoring this service guarantees that Paderborn/Lippstadt stays linked to Munich, an important hub for both national and international travel.
The ATR72-600 accommodates 70 passengers and is optimized for short-haul operations, consuming less fuel and generating lower noise levels than traditional jet aircraft. These characteristics make it suitable for regional airports with moderate traffic. This choice in operations prioritizes both efficiency and adaptability for regional air travel services. These planes can operate multiple daily rotations without the need for extensive airport facilities, making them particularly suitable for smaller airports such as Paderborn/Lippstadt.
"This is an especially quiet and efficient turboprop aircraft, specifically developed for shorter routes. Thanks to the latest technology, these planes fly in a more environmentally friendly way than conventional jets. If we achieve the targeted high load factor, the environmental performance will be absolutely impressive."
Skyhub PAD has also adjusted flight schedules to improve connections to international services via Munich Airport. Interline agreements with Swiss International Air Lines, Austrian Airlines, Air Dolomiti, Lufthansa City, and Discover Airlines allow baggage to be checked through to final destinations. These arrangements facilitate smoother transfers and reduce the need for repeated check-ins during layovers. These agreements show a deliberate attempt to connect regional air services with larger airline networks, simplifying travel planning for passengers.
The schedule enhancements expand travel options for residents and businesses in the East Westphalia-Lippe region. Early morning and late afternoon departures provide more flexible connections to long-haul flights, improving accessibility to major hubs across Europe and North America. These adjustments are particularly critical for travelers with limited time, including business passengers or those connecting to international flights. Consequently, the region benefits from enhanced connectivity while requiring minimal modifications to airport infrastructure.
The launch of Skyhub PAD services reinstates a regional air link that had been discontinued and enhances connections for passengers traveling through Munich. This development underscores the continuing role of regional airports in providing connections to wider transport networks. By integrating smaller airports into international flight systems, the initiative ensures that passengers can plan trips with fewer logistical obstacles and maintain continuity when connecting to long-haul destinations.
