Travelers planning journeys between Guildford, Reigate and Gatwick Airport should be aware of major changes from Sunday 14 September until Saturday 27 September. During this period trains will not operate along this section of the North Downs Line and replacement buses will be in place. Passengers should factor in additional travel time because buses will use alternative stops, which can extend journey durations. The Brighton Main Line will stay open, ensuring passengers can reach Gatwick Airport quickly from London and nearby towns.

The service changes are part of essential improvements to the railway infrastructure that will directly affect travelers. Network Rail engineers will carry out several key upgrades:

  • Install 16 new signal sets between Shalford and Gomshall to reduce delays and improve reliability.
  • Upgrade four level crossings Chilworth Tangley Brook and Burrows Lane with modern safety systems.
  • Implement radar and CCTV technology to allow barriers to operate safely and efficiently.
“We are sorry for the inconvenience facing passengers who use the North Downs Line between Guildford, Reigate and Gatwick Airport. The signalling upgrade is vital for safety, reliability, and future capacity, enabling more connections to Gatwick. Passengers travelling from London and east Surrey can still use the Brighton Main Line to reach the airport."
Mark Goodall, Network Rail’s Wessex route director

During the disruption, access to several popular local attractions may be affected. Visitors planning to hike or enjoy panoramic views will face longer travel times. Those visiting Polesden Lacey Estate for walks through its gardens and trails may need to plan extra time. Visitors planning to go to Dorking Deepdene Gardens will need to use replacement buses, which may not run as often as the regular trains. These short-term disruptions mean travelers should allow extra time and plan ahead to fully enjoy their visits.

Additional locations along the route could also become harder to reach during the service changes. Claremont Landscape Garden with its riverside walks will be less accessible using public transport. Hikers following the North Downs Way trail through nearby villages will need to plan for adjusted travel options. Visitors traveling to other viewpoints and walking paths along the line may experience delays as replacement buses stop at different locations than the trains normally do. Travelers are advised to plan ahead, leave extra time, and check the latest schedules before traveling.

Even with short-term disruptions, the improvements will make travel safer and more reliable in the long run. Upgraded signalling and enhanced level crossings are expected to make services more reliable, improve passenger safety, and enable more trains to run in the future. Travelers can continue using the Brighton Main Line to reach the airport quickly, but they should allow extra time and check schedules while the works are underway. Monitoring the North Downs Line signalling upgrade webpage will provide the latest updates and help travelers adjust plans to minimize inconvenience.
