Ryanair Increases Free Carry-On Size for Passengers

Ryanair has officially expanded its free carry-on allowance at all 235 airports it operates across Europe, starting Thursday, 4 September. Passengers can now take a personal bag sized 40 x 30 x 20 cm, which is 33% larger than the EU standard of 40 x 30 x 15 cm. Passengers may bring only one free carry-on that fits under the seat, with any extra items requiring Priority Boarding or a paid checked bag.
Airport staff have introduced a series of steps to assist passengers in adjusting to the updated carry-on rules. They have:
- Updated all bag sizes at Ryanair airports to match the new dimensions.
- Passengers with more than one bag who do not have Priority Boarding may need to pay checked baggage fees at the gate.
- Created a standardized framework for carry-on allowances across the airline’s network.
- Improved clarity for travelers, reducing disputes over what is allowed on board.
“All passengers wishing to bring a second carry bag can do so by availing of our Priority Boarding service, and passengers can also purchase check-in bags, should they so wish, during their booking process. We hope our customers will enjoy these bigger, free carry-on bag sizes, but any passenger who fails to comply with these new generous limits, will be required to pay the checked in bag fee at the boarding gate."
The increase in carry-on size provides practical advantages for passengers. Passengers are now able to bring additional personal items, including travel documents, electronics, and light clothing, without surpassing the allowed size. This change lowers the need to check bags on short and medium-haul flights and reduces the chance of surprise fees at the gate, making the airport experience more predictable for passengers.
The updated allowance also improves consistency and transparency. With uniform bag sizes in all airports, travelers can accurately plan what to bring on board. This consistent approach may make boarding more efficient, limit hold-ups due to larger carry-ons, and give travelers better control over their belongings on board.
The expansion of free carry-on limits by Ryanair provides a tangible benefit for travelers. Allowing a larger personal item supports easier packing and smoother boarding while remaining within cabin regulations. The aim of the change is to make journeys more manageable by giving travelers clearer instructions, more options, and improved handling of personal items on flights.
