Tourists in Rome may experience disruptions as the city’s traffic police prepare for industrial action, motivated by recent concerns over their safety following a severe road accident. The incident, which occurred mid-week, involved a drunk driver hitting three traffic officers, resulting in serious injuries, including the amputation of one officer’s leg. In response, unions representing the traffic police have announced a partial strike for late in the week during the afternoon, with a larger, day-long strike scheduled for the following week.

The unions, including Ospol, Ugl, and Sulpl, emphasize that the strikes are a stand against the unsafe working conditions faced by traffic officers in the capital. The recent accident has highlighted the dangers encountered daily by officers responsible for maintaining order on Rome's busy roads. The second strike, organized by additional unions, including Cgil, Cisl, and Uil, underscores the urgency of these safety concerns and the need for systemic improvements.

For travelers, the strikes could mean considerable delays in navigating the city. Public transport disruptions, combined with a decrease in active traffic police officers, may create increased congestion in popular tourist areas. With the strike overlapping with a national transport strike, visitors may face extended travel times, and those relying on city transit services may encounter limitations on routes and frequency of services.

Tourists are encouraged to plan their travel around the city carefully during this period. Alternative modes of transport, such as walking or using ride-sharing services, might be more reliable for short distances. Those planning to visit multiple attractions in one day may want to consider adjusting schedules to avoid potential bottlenecks and delays caused by reduced traffic management and transport services.

This strike also highlights ongoing challenges faced by essential workers in Rome, particularly those in public safety roles. The events emphasize the critical role of traffic police in ensuring a safe and orderly environment for both residents and visitors. For those exploring the city, this disruption serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in maintaining smooth operations in a popular and bustling tourist destination.
