In January 2025, Greater Manchester brought its local bus network under public control as part of the Bee Network. This transition aims to improve bus services by adjusting schedules, fares, and connectivity. The goal is to create a more reliable transport system that offers frequent services, reduces travel delays, and ensures better access to different areas for both residents and visitors.

From March 23, 2025, a contactless 'tap-in tap-out' system was introduced on buses and trams. This eliminates the need for paper tickets and allows passengers to pay fares seamlessly across different transport modes. The system includes automatic fare caps, ensuring passengers do not pay more than the daily or weekly limit, which simplifies budgeting and prevents overpayment for frequent travelers.

These enhancements improve mobility in Greater Manchester by reducing the dwell time of high-frequency bus/tram routes. When the various parts of the region are integrated, this allows for passengers to move between different areas within the region with seamless interchange services. The adjustments help improve connectivity to key destinations, making public transport a more practical option for everyday travel and reducing the dependence on private vehicles.

The implementation of contactless payments and fare capping provides a more convenient and predictable travel experience. Tourists and business travelers can move around the city without concerns about local currency or ticket machines. The removal of cash transactions speeds up boarding times, preventing long queues and ensuring a smoother journey for all passengers using the network.

The restructuring of public transport aims to increase efficiency and accessibility while addressing congestion issues. Greater Manchester is modernising transport infrastructure by bringing in a fresh approach to payment and improved service coordination. These changes create a more connected and user-friendly system, making it easier for both residents and visitors to navigate the city while promoting a shift towards more sustainable travel solutions.
