New Train Line Offers Budget-Friendly Rail Adventure Across Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia

A new train route connecting Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia promises an exciting rail adventure for as little as €8. Launched by Slovenian Railways, this service revives a historic route and offers a scenic journey through three countries and eight towns and cities in just two hours. The service is available until September 30, 2024.
The train departs from Trieste, Italy, and travels through several picturesque stops, including Šapjane and Opatija Matulji in Croatia, before reaching its final destination, Rijeka. The revived route follows a railway line originally built over 150 years ago under the Austro-Hungarian empire, offering passengers a glimpse into the region's rich history.
Perfect for a long weekend getaway, the train allows travelers to hop on and off at various stops, exploring the unique attractions of each location. At Opatija Matulji, passengers can enjoy a stay at the nearby Opatija resort, known for its rococo villas and grand hotels overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Rijeka, the final stop, is a vibrant port city with promenades lined with Habsburg-era palaces and a 19th-century theater decorated by Gustav Klimt.
Running daily until September 30, 2024, the train departs from Villa Opicina station in Trieste at 7:50 am, making stops in Ilirska Bistrica and Rijeka. The return journey from Rijeka departs at 6:25 pm, arriving back in Trieste by 8:40 pm. Single adult tickets for the entire journey start at just €8, making it an affordable travel option for budget-conscious adventurers.
This new service not only offers a cost-effective way to explore multiple European countries but also hopes to become a permanent route in the future. For now, travelers can take advantage of this unique opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia through a leisurely and scenic rail journey.
