The start of an hourly Sunday timetable at West Runton on 14 December 2025 brings an important change to the Bittern Line. For years, Sunday passengers had to work their plans around long pauses in the timetable, which made coastal journeys feel less convenient. With trains now running every hour, weekend travel becomes far more straightforward, giving people a steadier flow of options and reducing the effort needed to arrange simple day trips.

This expansion follows sustained local demand for greater weekend connectivity and aligns with improvements already made on the Norwich to Sheringham route. The earlier start of additional services provides travellers with more practical options for morning departures and reduces bottlenecks common during peak recreational hours. The inclusion of longer, modern trains further enhances reliability, contributing to steadily increasing passenger numbers and reinforcing the line’s role as a dependable transport link throughout the year.

“We are pleased to be launching an hourly Sunday service for West Runton this Sunday, giving customers and the community there an hourly service seven days a week. Wherever practical, we try to develop and improve services in line with local needs, so we’re glad that we can provide this enhancement, which follows local feedback about service aspirations."
Jonathan Denby, Head of Corporate Affairs for Greater Anglia

How the new timetable benefits travellers

The more frequent timetable opens up easier access to several nearby attractions. West Runton’s position between Cromer and Sheringham places it within reach of well known coastal viewpoints, allowing travellers to adjust plans without the pressure of lengthy intervals between trains. The shorter waits also improve convenience for those exploring quiet beaches, local heritage spots and scenic routes that draw day trippers during all seasons.

Walkers using the Coastal Path also gain from the new timetable, as the extra trains let them choose from a wider range of starting and finishing times. It becomes simpler to set off on a last minute outing, whether it is a brief cold-season walk, a relaxed seaside afternoon or an unhurried weekend escape. The new timetable supports a wider range of plans without the pressure of strict timing.

This development signals a shift toward a more accessible and flexible weekend network in North Norfolk. This update eases the need for rigid planning, improves access to coastal towns and helps create a more dependable network for travellers throughout the year. As the area continues to attract visitors outside the traditional summer period, consistent Sunday services will play an increasingly important role in helping people navigate the region with confidence.
