In June, vital maintenance work will cause significant rail service interruptions between Bristol and South Wales. From Monday 9 June to Friday 20 June, and again on Sunday 29 June, Network Rail will close sections of the line in South Gloucestershire, including the Severn Tunnel, to replace tracks and carry out essential overhead line repairs. This work will result in the suspension of direct trains on this busy route for the duration of these dates.

Passengers traveling between Bristol and South Wales must plan for changes, as direct services will not operate. Travelers will instead have to change trains at Gloucester or Cheltenham Spa, where services will still operate to South Wales. London to South Wales services will be rerouted via Gloucester instead of Bristol Parkway, leading to extended journey times. Replacement buses will operate during peak times, but service levels may be limited and unable to accommodate typical passenger numbers.

The maintenance work includes:

  • Track replacement in the Filton and Stoke Gifford areas
  • Overhead power line maintenance within the Severn Tunnel
  • Repairs and vegetation management on the Wales side of the route

Among the main locations impacted by these disruptions are Bristol, famous for landmarks such as the SS Great Britain and Bristol Harbourside, which will become more difficult to reach because of altered routes. Cardiff’s well-known attractions, including Cardiff Castle and the Millennium Stadium, will also experience reduced direct train access. At the same time, the historic city of Bath, known for its Roman Baths and Royal Crescent, will experience extended travel times and more complicated routes.

Tourists visiting the scenic Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean, both popular for outdoor activities and nature walks, should anticipate delays. Access to Chepstow Castle, a notable medieval landmark near the Severn Bridge, will also be affected. Due to limited bus replacements and longer train trips, travelers to these locations should expect delays and plan their travel accordingly.

We can only provide a limited replacement bus service between Bristol Parkway and Severn Tunnel Junction or Newport in the morning and the evening Monday to Saturday.
Marcus Deegan, GWR station manager for Bristol Parkway

Despite the disruption, these upgrades are vital for maintaining the safety and reliability of rail infrastructure on this key corridor. When the track and overhead line work is finished, passengers should notice fewer delays and more reliable trains. Passengers should anticipate more dependable services and stronger safety standards after the upgrades are finished.
