German Police Brace for Hooligan Influx During Euro 2024

A German police chief has disclosed that hundreds of football hooligans are expected to arrive in the country for the Euro 2024 tournament. Recent investigations have revealed that extremists are already plotting to disrupt the event.

With the Euro 2024 tournament commencing on June 14, concerns about hooliganism are mounting. Local authorities in Gelsenkirchen, where England is set to play against Serbia on Sunday, have reassured fans about their safety.

Peter Both, the chief of police in Gelsenkirchen, stated that while there is no concrete intelligence on hooligans traveling from Serbia, Russia or other countries, the possibility cannot be entirely ruled out. "We are prepared for any kind of hooliganism and will have a significant police presence next Sunday," Both said.

To mitigate any potential violence, extensive security measures are in place. "Our units will maintain a low profile but will intervene proactively if violent behavior arises. We have spotters from various countries who can identify known hooligans," Both explained.

The risk posed by local German fan groups is considered minimal. Both noted that German ultras are generally uninterested in the tournament due to their disdain for UEFA.

Gelsenkirchen, home to Schalke 04, has a history of football-related violence. However, Both emphasized that no intelligence suggests that local clashes will occur during Euro 2024.

England’s last European Championship appearance was marred by chaos at Wembley in 2021. However, Both assured that measures have been taken to prevent similar incidents. "We have an ultra-security perimeter far from the stadium, where fans will be searched and escorted in smaller groups. A riot control unit will be on standby to prevent unauthorized entry," he said.
