Free Accommodation on Sardinia's Hiking Trail for Young People
The Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara Foundation is offering free accommodation for young people under 35 who want to hike the 500-kilometer trail in Sardinia. This initiative aims to introduce young travelers to the island's history and natural beauty, going beyond its well-known beaches.
The Santa Barbara trail traverses sand dunes, oak forests, and cliffs above the Mediterranean. It follows in the footsteps of miners, revealing part of the history of this picturesque Italian island.
CMSB's initiative, called "Leg's go in Cammino," will run until June 15 and then resume from September 15 to December 31, 2024. The entire trail is divided into 30 stages, each about 16 kilometers long. Although the foundation provides only three nights of free accommodation per hiker, it is enough to make the journey more accessible. Accommodation options include hostels, campsites, and B&Bs with breakfast included.
Each of the 30 stages passes by the ruins of mines and deserted villages, surrounded by beautiful coastal views. Not all remnants date back to the Industrial Revolution; some roads date back to Roman times. Highlights of the trail include the San Giovanni caves, the majestic Piscina Irgas waterfall, and the Marganai oak forests.
This hike is an opportunity not only to enjoy nature but also to touch history, learn more about the life of miners, and see unique historical landmarks hidden in the heart of Sardinia.
