Following the footsteps of the Incas: another South American country introduces a visa
The Peruvian government has announced its intention to introduce visas for digital nomads. This allows people who work remotely to stay in the country for 365 days, with the possibility of extending their stay if necessary.
The aim of the new scheme is to attract international specialists to Peru, hoping that they will contribute to the development of the country's economy. This was reported by euronews.travel.
What is a digital nomad visa?
The Digital Nomad Visa is a long-term visa or temporary residence permit for those who earn income by working remotely. As a rule, these visas will be from one to two years, but can be extended for a longer period of time.
Who will be eligible for a digital visa?
The new visa is intended for remote workers who work for companies outside the country. Therefore, they will not need to obtain a separate work visa. In November, the government announced that it hoped the extended stay would give nomads time to explore the country's tourist, gastronomic, and cultural features while working remotely. The visa will be available once the migration law is amended and published.
Is Peru suitable for a digital nomad?
- Lima, the capital of Peru, has offices of international companies and cozy coworking spaces where you can work.
- An obvious advantage of living in Peru is the low cost of living for nomads working for European companies. According to the online database Numbeo, consumer prices, including rent, are 87 percent higher in Italy compared to Peru, 112 percent higher in France, and 120 percent higher in the UK.
- If you intend to explore the culture in addition to work, there are also many places to visit, from the world-famous Machu Picchu to the Amazon rainforest with its diverse plants and animals to the peaks of the Cordillera Huay Vach.
- The country also attracts gourmets with the bold flavors of its national cuisine, from fresh ceviche to roast beef with a subtle smoke of lomo saltado.
Where else in South America can you apply for a digital visa?
- In Argentina, as of last year, digital nomads can stay for 180 days with the possibility of extension, provided they can prove that they have an appropriate source of income.
- In 2022 Brazil also introduced a remote work visa that allows for a one-year extension, followed by Ecuador, which allows for a two-year stay.
- This year Colombia launched a two-year digital nomadic visa, and Uruguay introduced a visa with a 180-day extension.
