Overnight infrastructure work on the A91 Roma Fiumicino motorway will temporarily restrict direct access to key airport roads leading to the Departures and Arrivals zones. According to the announcement from ANAS, the Italian national road operator, these closures will take place between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. on the nights of May 12 and 13, 2025. The stretches of road being closed include via Giorgio Cayley and via Mario de Bernardi, two well-used routes that usually funnel cars straight toward the airport.

During the closure hours, all vehicles heading to Fiumicino Airport will be diverted through the Ostia Fiumicino corridor. Instead of the usual path, drivers will be guided through a backup route that winds along via Caproni and then swings around via Arturo Ferrarin. Temporary signage will be installed along the way to help drivers navigate the detour. It is important to note that the route toward via Baracca, where the main bus terminal and arrival zones are located, includes a height restriction of 3.8 meters, which may limit access for larger vehicles.

These changes could slow things down on the road, especially if you're heading to the airport late at night or before sunrise, when every minute really counts. Travelers using shuttle buses, ride-share services, or private transfers may face route changes that increase journey durations. If you're not used to driving in the area, the pop-up signs and detours might feel like a maze, making it easier to take a wrong turn or show up late. Transport operators are advised to account for possible delays in their schedules.

Even though it’s a hassle now, the goal of these overnight shutdowns is to fix up the roads around the airport so they work better and safer in the long run. Road maintenance in this section aims to reduce congestion and prevent future disruptions, particularly during peak travel periods. Authorities will continue to post updates regularly to help both passengers and drivers stay ahead of any changes and plan their routes without last-minute surprises.

Anyone planning to get to Fiumicino during those hours should plan ahead, check their route closely, and give themselves some breathing room to avoid getting stuck or rushed. Last-minute roadwork can completely derail well-organized travel, and even a small change in your route might be enough to throw your schedule off or make you miss your flight. Taking proactive steps, such as using navigation apps and consulting live traffic reports, can help minimize inconvenience.
