Rain showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop across the southwest and west of the UK starting late Saturday, as a low-pressure system moves in from mainland Europe. After a period of warm and settled weather, travellers can expect more unstable conditions this weekend, especially in areas like Wales, southern England, and parts of Northern Ireland.

While the east and central UK will continue to experience dry weather with rising temperatures, the west will face heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds throughout Sunday and Monday. Sudden downpours may result in localized flooding, which could affect travel arrangements in some parts. The unsettled weather is expected to be short-lived, with high pressure returning early next week, bringing drier and more stable conditions across the UK, improving the outlook for those planning trips.

Hail, lightning, and isolated strong wind gusts would be additional hazards. Forecasting exactly where thunderstorms will form at this range is fraught with uncertainty, so please stay up to date with the Met Office forecast through the weekend, and any severe weather warnings which may be issued.
Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Dan Harris

For those planning to travel to the southwest, this weather pattern could cause transport delays or safety concerns, particularly on rural roads and in outdoor destinations. Plans for hiking, camping, or attending events in open areas might need to be adjusted, especially if thunderstorms intensify. Limited visibility, slippery paths, and temporary route closures are all possible during periods of heavy rainfall.

However, the quick return of high pressure and warmer air early next week offers an improved outlook for those travelling after the weekend. Central and eastern areas are expected to enjoy continued dry conditions with highs possibly reaching 27°C. For travellers with flexible schedules, adjusting travel to avoid the storm period could help ensure smoother journeys and safer experiences.

This brief disruption emphasizes the need to stay updated on local weather forecasts and be ready for sudden changes, especially when traveling to or within the western parts of the UK. The general outlook is positive for early summer travel, but staying informed and flexible is crucial, particularly for those planning outdoor activities or using road transport.
