Train services between Leicester and Peterborough will be suspended over the weekend of 2 and 3 August due to scheduled engineering works. Network Rail has confirmed that no trains will run on this stretch during the two days. The disruption is linked to maintenance works near Manton, where infrastructure upgrades will be carried out. Travellers should prepare for longer journey times and reduced rail access throughout the affected area.

CrossCountry services on this section will not operate during the scheduled works. In their place, rail replacement buses will serve the route. The buses will make stops at these locations along the way:

  • Melton Mowbray
  • Oakham
  • Stamford

Travellers should be aware that:

  • Journey times may be longer than usual
  • Buses may not follow the exact train timetable
  • Passengers with luggage or tight connections should plan accordingly
  • It is important to check travel information in advance to avoid delays
This essential track and drainage work represents a significant investment in our rail infrastructure. While we understand the temporary inconvenience to passengers, these improvements will deliver more reliable services in the future. We thank passengers for their patience as we carry out this vital maintenance work.
Dan Matthews, operations director for Network Rail’s East Midlands route

The planned works involve both track renewal and drainage improvements. The work is meant to help trains run more smoothly in the future, especially during bad weather or when older parts of the track start to wear out. However, in the short term, they mean service disruption for passengers across the East Midlands. The temporary closure affects not only intercity travel but also regional access to towns often visited by leisure travellers on weekends.

For those heading out on weekend trips, this closure could interrupt plans to visit rural destinations, attend events, or make day trips across the region. Buses filling in for the trains will likely take more time and show up less often, particularly when lots of people are trying to travel. If you're counting on buses or trains to get to smaller places or rural spots, be ready to leave earlier than planned or look for another way to get there.

Even basic repair work like this can throw off travel plans, showing how quickly a normal trip can turn complicated. These upgrades might make future trips easier, but for now, anyone taking this route over the weekend should expect slower journeys and fewer options to get where they're going. Advance planning, checking real-time updates, and building extra time into travel schedules will be essential for anyone moving through the East Midlands.
