European Space Agency shows an impressive video of the Martian "Labyrinth of Night"
The European Space Agency has shown a new video from Mars, which depicts a breathtaking view of the Mariner Valley, which is more than 4 thousand kilometers long.
The footage shows the fantastic Martian Labyrinth of Night, which is a complex of intersecting canyons. It stretches for 1,200 km. The video was posted on the ESA website.
The unique system of canyons is surrounded by the largest volcanoes in the solar system, which is the reason for the formation of canyons. Once upon a time, volcanoes forced the crust of the Red Planet to stretch upward, creating cracks in it billions of years ago.
Thanks to satellites orbiting the planet, scientists have been able to capture incredible Martian landscapes. However, ESA researchers warn that part of this video contains computer visualization footage that was made based on images of the region taken by ESA's Mars Express orbiter, as well as available topographic data.
The scale of the Labyrinth of Night is truly impressive. Some of the canyon valleys are up to 30 km wide and 5 km deep. For comparison, the Grand Canyon is 6 to 29 km wide and has a maximum depth of 1,857 meters.
