Travelers in the East Midlands should expect changes to their weekend plans on Saturday 20 September as essential track work takes place at Syston North Curve. Rail services connecting Nottingham and Leicester and some long-distance trains to London St Pancras will operate on new schedules. Anyone planning to visit local parks, country trails or outdoor attractions along these routes will need to check updated timetables, as some stations will be skipped and replacement transport may be in use.

Passengers should be prepared for a range of changes affecting both train times and station stops during the works. The upgrade includes several key elements that travelers should be aware of:

  • Replacement of over 560 metres of worn track on a section heavily used by freight trains, which experiences above-average wear.
  • Around 130 staff will carry out the work within a single weekend to limit disruption.
  • Travel to stations such as Barrow-upon-Soar, Sileby and Syston will require replacement buses.
  • Early morning Nottingham to Norwich services will depart later than usual and will omit several stops.
  • Some nearby outdoor and recreational areas could be more difficult to access, requiring adjustments to travel plans.

Those planning to visit popular local sites should allow extra time for their journeys. From Barrow-upon-Soar, reaching Watermead Country Park may take longer due to skipped stations. Getting to Mountsorrel Quarry and Heritage Centre in Sileby will take longer while the rail work is underway. Travel to Belgrave Hall and Gardens near Syston could take longer than usual, as passengers will need to use replacement buses. The adjustments could impact both day visitors and weekend travelers planning outdoor or cultural outings.

Further along the line, altered services will influence travel to other notable destinations. From East Midlands Parkway, access to Attenborough Nature Reserve, popular for walking and wildlife observation, will be less straightforward. Access to Beacon Hill Country Park near Loughborough and Rutland Water Nature Reserve in Oakham could take longer than usual, so visitors should plan ahead. These adjustments highlight the importance of checking timetables and transport alternatives before setting out.

“We recommend customers planning to travel on Saturday 20 September to check their journey in advance. Information about the changes to services can be found on the EMR website. We would like to thank our customers for their patience whilst Network Rail carry out this essential infrastructure works. This will greatly benefit our customers in the future with more reliable journeys to and from London."
Philippa Cresswell, customer experience director for East Midlands Railway

Despite the short-term inconvenience, the upgrade is expected to benefit travelers in the long term. By renewing worn track in a concentrated weekend operation, future maintenance and unexpected delays can be reduced. After the weekend works are finished, travel between Nottingham, Leicester and London should become more dependable, helping passengers complete their journeys with fewer disruptions.
