Braga Gets a New Reason to Stay Longer

IHG Hotels & Resorts has signed Esperança Hotel, Vignette Collection in Braga, adding a new luxury stay to one of northern Portugal’s most historic cities. The 58-room hotel is due to open in September 2026 and will join IHG’s Vignette Collection, a group of individually styled hotels that keep their own name and local character.
The hotel will be created through the conversion of two existing buildings in Braga’s city centre. The property is owned by Hotel Janes Lda., led by Luciana Borges, and will be managed by Amazing Evolution. IHG said the signing brings its open and pipeline Vignette Collection portfolio in Portugal to six hotels, as the brand continues to grow across the country.
The Braga property will sit alongside other Portuguese Vignette Collection hotels, including Convent Square Lisbon, Casa da Companhia Hotel & Spa in Porto and Onyria Marinha Cascais. The brand launched in 2021 and has already passed the halfway point towards its target of 100 hotels by 2030. Across Europe, it now has six open hotels and 17 more in development.
Braga could become a stronger stop for travellers building a northern Portugal itinerary. The city has around two thousand years of history, with baroque churches, old squares, tiled façades and the Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary nearby. It also works well with Porto, Guimarães and the Minho region, giving visitors a quieter base with proper day-trip potential.
The signing matters because Braga often sits behind Portugal’s louder names, even though it has enough history, food and architecture for more than a quick visit. A small luxury hotel in the centre could help turn the city into a proper overnight stay, not just a side trip. For travellers, that means another reason to slow down in northern Portugal.
