Big Travel Shake-Up on 15 June: London Trains Suspended Across Four Counties
Train services between London and Peterborough will be suspended for one day on Sunday 15 June due to testing of a new digital signalling system. The work will take place on the East Coast Main Line as part of a wider infrastructure upgrade aimed at modernising the network between Potters Bar and Royston and further north to Peterborough.
Several rail operators have confirmed limited or diverted services on the affected date. LNER, Grand Central, Hull Trains, Lumo, Thameslink and Great Northern will adjust their schedules. Some trains will terminate early, while others will be rerouted or replaced by bus connections. No trains will run between Finsbury Park and central London or along other key routes linking Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire.
The disruption will extend across multiple regions and impact a wide range of passengers:
- Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and North London will see reduced rail access
- Hitchin, Stevenage, Royston and Biggleswade will lose direct connections to London
- Travellers from St Albans and Luton Airport Parkway will rely on replacement buses
- Timetables and frequencies across the network will be temporarily revised
Each operator will implement the following adjustments:
- LNER trains will terminate at Peterborough with onward bus connections to Bedford and Thameslink services to London
- Grand Central will operate a reduced service to Peterborough only, with no Bradford trains
- Hull Trains will divert to London St Pancras
- Lumo will provide a direct non-stop coach between King’s Cross and Peterborough
- Great Northern and Thameslink will suspend several routes, with buses serving affected sections
While major upgrades are being carried out to the East Coast Main Line, our teams will be working hard to keep customers on the move as smoothly as possible. We know that breaking up a rail journey is never ideal, but we would strongly encourage LNER customers to make use of the rail replacement service provided, connecting Peterborough and Bedford. This will help all customers enjoy a more comfortable journey.
Although the disruption may complicate travel plans, it supports the East Coast Digital Programme, a £1.4 billion upgrade to introduce in-cab digital signalling. This system enables more precise train control, reduces delays and supports low-emission travel. Travellers should check schedules in advance, allow extra time for changes and use official sources to plan alternative connections.
