Berlin Gets More Eurowings Winter Flights

Eurowings will expand its Berlin Brandenburg Airport base to eleven aircraft in the coming winter programme. The Lufthansa Group airline will add two aircraft and grow its Berlin-based workforce to more than 300 crew members. The move strengthens its position at BER, where it is moving closer to becoming the airport’s leading airline.
The winter programme will add Bologna as a new nonstop destination, giving Berlin a direct link to Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region. Eurowings will also increase services to the Canary Islands, with more flights to Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Tenerife. Bookings for the Bologna route and added island flights open on 21 May.
The airline says its Berlin network is expected to reach almost 50 destinations, with the final winter schedule due to be confirmed in July. Eurowings has grown at BER since the pandemic, when it initially based three aircraft there, and has since added business, city and leisure routes, including its "Capital Express" services.
The added flights give Berlin passengers more options for both short breaks and winter sun. Bologna opens easier access to portico-lined streets, food markets and nearby Emilia-Romagna towns, while the Canary Islands add warmer choices during colder months. The extra island services should also help travellers avoid some connecting journeys through other airports.
The growth is useful for Berlin, but Eurowings is warning that Germany remains a difficult market for airlines. Chief executive Max Kownatzki pointed to higher taxes, fees, fuel costs and EU regulation as barriers to further development. The result is mixed: more choice at BER now, while future growth may depend on whether operating costs become less restrictive.
