airBaltic Launches Direct Flights Between Gran Canaria and Ljubljana
The Latvian airline airBaltic has launched a new direct connection between Gran Canaria (Spain) and Ljubljana (Slovenia). The route will run once a week, every Friday, until early April 2026, with a flight time of about five hours. It aims to strengthen tourism links during the winter season and improve access between the Canary Islands and Central Europe.
According to Mantas Vrubliauskas, Vice President of Network Management at airBaltic, the new link is designed to attract more visitors from Slovenia seeking warm-weather destinations in the colder months. At the same time, it offers residents of Gran Canaria the chance to explore Ljubljana’s historic old town, architecture, and vibrant cultural scene. The route reflects growing demand for year-round leisure travel between southern and northern Europe.
“The new route between the two cities is expected to attract more tourists from Slovenia to Gran Canaria during the colder months, when travelers in Central Europe are seeking sunny and warm destinations, while also providing residents of Gran Canaria the opportunity to explore Ljubljana, famous for its beautiful old town and lively atmosphere. We are grateful to our partners in Gran Canaria for supporting this expansion, which improves the island’s connectivity to a variety of destinations in Europe."
The service is operated using the Airbus A220-300, known for its fuel efficiency and passenger comfort. Travellers can expect wider seats, larger windows, and more cabin space, alongside free high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi, which airBaltic is gradually introducing across its fleet. The airline currently offers seven direct routes from Gran Canaria this winter, connecting the island with cities in Scandinavia, the Baltic, and Central Europe, including Riga, Tallinn, Vilnius, Oslo Torp, Molde, and Billund.
With the new flight, destinations such as Ljubljana’s old town, Lake Bled, and the Julian Alps become more accessible to visitors from Spain and the Canary Islands. In return, travellers from Slovenia can now fly straight to Gran Canaria to enjoy its beaches, mountain paths, and mild winter weather. The new service encourages movement in both directions, giving visitors more flexibility whether they plan a few days away or a longer holiday.
This connection underlines airBaltic’s strategy of linking southern leisure destinations with northern and eastern Europe. For travellers, it offers a practical way to swap snow for sun or culture for coast within a single flight. As airBaltic continues expanding its Spanish network, the link between Gran Canaria and Ljubljana reflects a wider move towards year-round, balanced European travel.
