A 44-year-old woman from Boston, USA, was attacked by a shark during her honeymoon in the Bahamas. Unfortunately, she could not be saved, and doctors pronounced her dead on the beach.
Her husband, who was swimming nearby at the time, managed to escape. According to a statement from the Royal Bahamas Police Force, the fatal incident occurred when the couple was sailing away from the shore of the Sandals Royal Bahamian resort on the Bahamian island of New Providence.
Witnesses to the tragedy said that the couple was snorkeling. When the shark attacked the woman, her husband screamed for help, prompting rescuers to rush to the victims in a boat.
He managed to pull both the man and his injured wife out of the water. She reportedly had serious wounds on her hip and shoulder on the right side.
Paramedics tried to save the American woman but eventually pronounced her dead on the beach. Witnesses of the tragedy said that shortly before the fatal incident, they saw a cheerful couple near the shore.
A jet ski operator who was on the beach at the time recalled noticing a shark more than 4 meters (about 14 feet) long dragging a surfboard underwater.
In a statement, Sandals Royal Bahamian said, "We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of a guest while surfing nearly a mile offshore. We would like to extend our sincere condolences to the guest's family and friends. We remain in close contact with them and provide all possible support during this difficult time."
